Client: NCIE (National Centre of Indigenous Excellence)
Project Work: Design and Construct
Builder: Built
Location: Redfern
The National Centre of Indigenous Excellence sits proudly on Gadigal land, home of the Gadigal peoples of the Eora nation and for many generations of Redfern locals the precinct was known as George Street Public school. After the school’s closure in 2003, redevelopment of the heritage listed buildings began and today the site maintains its historical educational purpose as the home of the NCIE.
As a vital part of the Redfern community, the NCIE facilitates positive transformative educational programs and provides access to high class recreational facilities, accommodation and business services.
Alland Group had the privilege of working with Built on this respected and important space, completing a full Design and Construct refurbishment of offices that included new power and lighting installations, emergency lighting and all communications and data requirements.
At the completion of the works Alland were honored to attend a smoking ceremony held at the site. The ancient ceremony involves the burning of various native plants as a cleansing ritual of place and is identified by the aboriginal community as a practice reserved for special occasions. Alland enjoyed being a part of this transformation and wish that the NCIE continues to be an important source of growth and inspiration for generations to come.
